If you’re recovering from bariatric surgery, you probably don’t want to think about undergoing any more surgical procedures such as body contouring. After the extreme weight loss you attained after bariatric surgery, your skin will be saggy and loose, and you aren’t much closer to being able to wear “regular” clothes than you were before the surgery. The flesh just hangs on your slimmer frame, and many people with this issue turn to body contouring to give their new form a proper shape.

Plastic surgeons understand that you will be discouraged after such a dramatic weight loss, that you will not look as good as you feel. Your surgeon will want you to know all your options and possibilities. If you just achieved major weight loss, but your skin is sagging all over your body, you certainly don’t feel healthy or slim. You can’t usually just have certain areas worked on with body contouring, without causing your body to look asymmetrical. You’ll probably need work on more than a few areas of your body.

For most people preparing for body contouring, the surgeries will be done in stages. The surgeon will start with your areas of most concern, generally the breasts, buttocks and abdomen, for women. The surgery involves cutting away the excess tissue and skin, and tightening the remaining skin against the body. Liposuction is not generally performed in this series of surgeries.

The actual approach that your body contouring surgery will use depends a lot on your personal desires and your surgeon. If you have surgery in the morning, you can usually return home the same night. However, if you have more extensive work done, you may need to spend three or four days in a hospital after the surgery. Your comfort with the surgeon and the work being done is the main consideration.

Most body contouring procedures are successful, and patients feel happier with their body when they are finished. But there are still factors to continue before you decide to have the surgery. There are psychological issues, and also a possibility that bariatric surgery may have left you deficient in some proteins, and malnourished. You may need to consult a nutritionist to have your needs assessed before you will be a candidate for body contouring. If you have undergone bariatric surgery but have not lost sufficient weight, then body contouring may not be viable yet. Surgeons usually will wait about a year after weight loss surgery before they will do the cosmetic surgery.

In addition to health concerns that you and your surgeon may have, you will also need to be prepared for the scarring that occurs after body contouring. It’s a natural reaction by the body, and is considered inevitable. But skilled surgeons can hide the scars along a bikini line, underneath the breasts or under the armpit.

The wounds will need time to heal, too. Since you may have nearly twenty or thirty pounds of tissue and skin removed, with deep incisions, there may be more pressure put on the sutures that hold the skin together. So you may have to watch for suture separation or other results of the wounds you received in surgery. Once you are feeling and looking better, you will probably be glad that you went this route, to get the body you have always wanted.
