Brow lift and forehead lifts are basically terms that refer to surgeries performed on people over forty years of age, and they may be accomplished at the same time as eyelid surgery, or along with a midface lift, to achieve more rejuvenation in your facial skin.

Forehead lifts can help you regain a youthful appearance, by helping to tighten, remove and alter the tissue and muscles of the brow, to lessen the appearance of wrinkles and folds. It is usually done on an outpatient basis, with a sedative and local anesthesia. Before your surgeon begins the procedure, your hair will be pinned back, and any hair on the incision line will be trimmed. The incision is generally made from the top of one of your ears, to the top of your scalp. It is located a few inches behind your hairline, and then goes down to the top of your other ear. For unusual cases, if the patient is balding or has a high hairline, the incision can be placed in a different area, so that the scar won’t be as obvious after surgery.

Your surgeon will work from the incision down, and carefully lift the skin, which will expose the tissue and muscle. Then tissue will be removed, and the muscles altered as needed, in order to achieve the results you want. After the surgery is complete, the hair and incision area are thoroughly washed, to prevent any infection. Then gauze padding and a wrap are applied to protect the area. The surgery generally takes between one and three hours.

A brow lift can be done now with less-invasive, endoscopic methods. If your surgeon uses this means of operation, there will be five or less inch-long incisions made at the scalp. A tiny camera, or endoscope, is inserted through one of the incisions, which gives your surgeon a good view inside your forehead. Then your surgeon will insert another instrument and will lift the skin away from the tissue and muscles. After that, your surgeon will sculpt the tissue and muscle just as he would in a traditional surgery. In this way, the chances of scarring are less, and you’ll have a shorter period of recovery.

After a brow lift or forehead lifts, bandages will be taken off after two days, and any clips or staples will be removed within roughly two weeks. You may experience some temporary hair loss, but it’s very rare for patients to experience permanent hair loss. You can generally return to work in about a week, and endoscopic patients can return to work even sooner.

Complications from forehead lifts are rare, but they may occur, as with any surgery, regardless of how skilled your surgeon is. These possible complications include excessive scarring, infection, hair loss, nerve damage, loss of skin and hemotoma.

Most patients that seek improvement through brow lift or forehead lifts are between forty and sixty years of age, with frown lines, horizontal creases on the forehead or sagging of eyebrows. The average cost for these procedures in 2003 was nearly $3000, an amount that can be a bit higher after you add in facility fees and anesthesia. These procedures give you a chance to have a youthful face once again, and the chance of complications is small.
