Since ancient days in Egypt, people have used chemical peels to help rejuvenate their skin. The first chemoexfoliant used was lactic acid, which is found in soured milk. This was applied topically to rejuvenate skin. Today, the main chemoexfoliants used contain alpha hydroxy acid, which is the ingredient that is responsible for the actual exfoliation of the skin.
Chemical peels produce a controlled partial injury to your skin. After that, the wound’s healing process regenerates epidermis from the surrounding structures. This results in an improved appearance of your skin.
The chemical peel that is done today was originally promoted by dermatologists who observed the properties of the peeling agents. From 1980 to today, there has been an amazing amount of research done, and as a result there are many types of chemical peels now in use. Each type of peel covers a specific type of problem.
The main reason that a chemical peel works in reducing wrinkles is collagen remodeling. This process remodels the collagen in a fashion that is parallel, and it begins as collagen forms after the peel.
A clinician must evaluate you before you will be approved for a chemical peel. If this clinician decides that you are a good candidate, the proper agent is selected for your individual skin. You will be taught about the process of the peel and you will need to give your written consent if you wish to have a medium or a deep peel.
When it is time for the procedure, the skin will be defatted by the use of acetone. Petroleum jelly will be applied to areas to be protected, including inside the nose and on the lips. Then the peeling agent is applied for the required amount of time. Only one agent is used at a time, to avoid confusion regarding which agents have and have not yet been used. The peeled area will be neutralized and then you will be sent home, with care instructions and advice to call in if you have any adverse reactions.
Patients who have skin that is severely damaged will probably not be good candidates for chemical peels, nor are people who have excellent skin. You must not smoke after a chemical peel, because the muscles used when puffing can worsen lines, and the smoke’s chemicals may cause reactions that will weaken your skin and cause further eye and mouth wrinkles.
If you have recently had any cosmetic surgery on your face, you will most likely need to wait several months, so that the skin has time to heal, before a chemical peel.
If you wish to have a chemical peel, you should be in good overall health. Phenols have been known to cause arrhythmia’s. Good liver and kidney function is needed for adequate detoxification and excretion. A blood chemistry may be drawn, to check various levels, and normally an ECG monitor is kept running during chemical peels.
If you are taking an oral contraceptive, this can cause skin discoloration, which the chemical peel was originally supposed to do away with. If you are on warfarin or coumadin blood thinners, you should not have a medium or deep chemical peel, because of the potential for loss of blood from the site that was peeled. Complications are not all that common, and chemical peels can leave you with a fully rejuvenated face.
