To find out if you’re a good candidate for liposuction cosmetic surgery, there are certain questions you will want to ask yourself.  If you have any of the following conditions, you likely are a positive candidate.

Areas of fatty deposits that aren’t in proportion with the remainder of your body, and that don’t go away even after exercise and diet. This is also known as “diet resistant fat”.
Areas with a minimum amount of excess skin, and good elasticity, since liposuction doesn’t remove skin along with the fat.
Excess fat areas in the neck, arms, back, breasts, ankles, calves, thighs, saddlebags, love handles, hips, buttocks and stomach.

Liposuction cosmetic surgery is effective for men as well as women, and generally improves the contours of your body. It can be used to thin an entire area, or smaller parts of your body where you feel you need fat removed. The healing process can be gradual, so it may take several months for you to notice the full effects of your surgery. The incisions used for inserting the canula will fade over a period of a few months, and will usually become barely visible. The results of your liposuction usually last for a long period of time, but they can be affected if you gain weight afterwards, if you become pregnant, or if other factors in your lifestyle change.

Your plastic surgeon will evaluate you to make sure you are a good candidate for liposuction. He or she may ask you to look in the mirror and point out the areas that you want to be improved. Your picture may be taken, for the “before” in your “before and after” story. These photos can also help your surgeon to determine what you expect, and to let you know what can actually be achieved. Your skin elasticity will also be checked, to make sure that the area is suitable for surgery. Your current weight and the ideal look that you are searching for will be discussed, and if you’re a woman, you’ll also want to let your surgeon know if you plan to become pregnant in the future.

Discuss your medical history with your surgeon. You will want to make note of prior surgeries, medical conditions you have now, or that you have had before, along with any medications and allergies. Be sure to provide complete information, since some conditions can affect your eligibility for surgery. For instance, if you have diabetes, thyroid issues or high blood pressure, you may have increased risks with surgery.

Liposuction cosmetic surgery removes the fatty tissue you want to get rid of with a hollow tube, or canula, that will be passed through your fatty areas. Some surgeons use a pump that creates a vacuum, and this process is known as suction-assisted liposuction or SAL. A motor may help the canula vacillate, and this process is called power-assisted liposuction or PAL. Sound waves may also be used, to break down the fat cells, and ready them to be removed. Or a laser may be used to break the fatty tissue down. Each method has pluses and minuses. The variety of methods will be discussed during the consultation. Your surgeon may use a combination of different techniques, whichever it is felt will work the best for you. The ultimate decision of what techniques to be used will be determined by your surgeon.

There are generally no significant complications after liposuction cosmetic surgery, and it’s one of the more common procedures that plastic surgeons perform. Most times this surgery doesn’t cause any major problems, and you’ll be back to your regular schedule within about ten days after your surgery.
