If you are in pretty good shape physically, but you have some loose skin on your lower body, you may be an ideal candidate for a lower body lift. This surgery is very similar to a tummy tuck, and it tightens and lifts the skin of your buttocks and thighs. A lower body lift can help to remove excess tissue from the inner thigh and lateral hip, which addresses the skin-sagging issue you may have from weight fluctuations, pregnancy or aging. This surgery won’t replace liposuction, but you often can have both procedures done at the same time. A lower body lift can rejuvenate your body by reversing the sagging that is associated with aging. Liposuction only removes fat to reveal more appealing contours.
A lower body lift is performed in a hospital, and you will need to stay in the hospital for two days or so, after it is done. It is more extensive work than liposculpture, which can usually be done on an out-patient basis. To prepare your body for surgery, your physician will mark it extensively, indicating where to make incisions. You will be put under general anesthesia, and will be unconscious for the duration of the procedure.
There are three separate stages the surgeon will use to conduct a lower body lift. Within the first two stages, you will be lying on your side, and the excess fatty tissue and skin will be removed from your thigh, hip and buttock areas. In the third stage, which is similar to a tummy tuck, the surgeon will remove excess fat and skin in your abdominal area, which will tighten your abdominal muscles. The incisions that are used for a lower body lift will normally be hidden afterwards, by underwear or swim suits, and they generally run around the circumference of your upper thighs.
After your lower body lift is complete, your surgeon will place drains in the incisions, to prevent fluid from collecting within them. The nurses will apply dressings to the areas, and sometimes you will be fitted with a pressure garment, like a girdle. You will probably stay one or two nights in the hospital, and you will be monitored for the entire time. The staff and surgeon will ensure that you are not developing any of the issues sometimes found after any surgical procedure, like collection of fluid, changes in sensation in the skin, numbness, early-stage scarring, skin loss and delayed healing of the wounds. As with most surgeries, there is a chance of pneumonia, blood clots, infection or bleeding when the procedure is complete. The risks are no greater than with most other true surgeries, however.
A lower body lift is not just cosmetic – it is a full surgical procedure, and it has the potential for giving you a significant improvement in your body’s appearance. If you have worked hard to lose a good deal of weight, a lower body lift can complete that process, and allow you to truly enjoy the results of all the work you’ve done to reshape your body. Lower body lifts aren’t for everyone, but if you are a candidate, a board-certified surgeon can help you improve your appearance and your self-confidence.
